It’s certainly too late to call the window washers, which means you’ll have to clean the windows yourself to make them look a whole lot better.

Tearing out weeds, folding laundry, washing dishes after a meal, and oh, yes, cleaning the windows are the usual suspects for the least favorite household tasks a homeowner will need to perform at some point.

In terms of cleaning dirty windows, if you don’t have the time to research and hire a professional window washer or have the budget to have them done regularly, you can clean them yourself.

Top 10 to Clean Your Windows

Here are 10 simple tips and tricks to get your windows in tip-top shape so everyone can see out of them when it’s time for brunch and well beyond after the boss leaves.

  1. Buy a quality squeegee from a home improvement store. Opt for one that is strong, sturdy and avoid purchasing a squeegee at the local dollar and bargain stores. A professional-grade squeegee often has soft, rubber blades.
  2. If possible, wash your windows on a cool, or cloudy day versus when it’s sunny and hot. If do need to wash them on a sunny day always tackle cleaning them in the morning to avoid heat.
  3. Fill a bucket with lukewarm water and add 2 and 3 tablespoons of plain ammonia. Use a large, soft sponge, and one that has a scrubber on the other side. Another cleaning solution you can try includes 2 cups water, 1/4 cup white vinegar, 1/2 teaspoon dish detergent.
  4. Wet your window with the spongy side of the sponge, then change to the scrubbing pad side and scrub down the window from top to bottom. Use your finger to feel if the window is clean of debris. You will be able to feel when the window is clean; if you feel rough patches or areas, this means the window is not clear yet. If the window isn’t clean it will appear cloudy so continue to scrub until the window looks and feels clean.
  5. Have a supply of clean, white cotton rags/towels/cleaning cloths on hand to dry the window. Another option is to use good diapers, or crumbled newspaper pages.
  6. Start drying by hand from the top of the window. The goal is to make sure the squeegee has not left behind any streaks or marks.
  7. Continue using the squeegee from the top of the window while moving downward in a smooth fashion. Dry the squeegee blade with a towel/rag etc. in between each sweep.
  8. For the inside window tracks, you can use a sponge brush dipped in Pine-sol to get rid of debris. The tracks will look professionally cleaned and the solution leaves a great smell. Also, for screens opt for a lint roller to remove fuzz and dirt.
  9. For tall windows, you can’t reach and don’t feel like bringing out out the ladder, or step stool wrap soft paper towels around your Swiffer or sponge mop head. Spray the window with the cleaning solution you devised and clean the window running the head from top to bottom.
  10. Another way to get to the top of windows or tall windows is to use a long-handled squeegee for fast, easy, and clear windows.
